For most of us Christmas is a time to relax and take it easy. But along with A&E staff, police and fire service, Anglian Water has staff on call throughout Christmas, ready to respond in case of an emergency. Sarah Dobson caught up with a few of them to find out more.

Anglian Water staff will be on call over the Christmas holidays and ready to respond in case of an emergency to keep water pipes and sewers working as they should throughout the festive period.

We know the last thing people want when they have friends and family staying with them over Christmas is for the taps to run dry or the party to be spoilt by the smell of overflowing drains.

That’s why we have dedicated teams throughout the eastern region available to help during the holiday period.

Sam Naylor, is a water technician across the border in Norfolk. He’s available to help customers in across the county this Christmas Day and Boxing Day, but says it’s all part of the job.

“After 5 years with Anglian Water doing a job I love, this will be my first Christmas on standby. Hopefully it won’t be too busy. In the ‘Naylor household’ were used to the perils of working for Anglian Water operations and the need to retain 24/7 service to our customers. My brother and my Dad are both Anglian Water employees, and between the 3 of us its normal for a bit of disruption to holiday periods.

“If all goes well the turkey will be served at lunchtime, but if I’m out on a job it will be ‘taken up’ and served with a well earned Shandy bass – when I manage to make it home I’m looking forward to a nice lie in on Boxing Day and a beer or two to bring in my Christmas cheer!”

With many homes cooking turkey dinners over Christmas and each turkey when cooked produces a staggering 3/4 of a pint of fat, it’s really important to make sure drains are kept clear.

Simon Downey and Nick Biggs are a two man team of sewer technicians who will be on call in Essex over the New Year celebrations. There will be ten sewer tech teams working over Christmas across the region.

“I would normally be out at a house party with the family on New Year’s Eve but not this year!” says Simon. “I was working on Christmas Day a couple of years ago and we had jobs on our books all day for about 10 hours – lots of toilet blockages and fallen manhole covers. A lot of people were completely shocked when we turned up and they asked what we were doing working on Christmas Day, but it was just another shift for us.

“We provide a service 365 days a year and we take a great deal of pride in that.”

The social media team will be in the office on non-bank holidays over Christmas – but if there is an incident at any other time they are on standby to make sure we communicate with customers and keep them updated.

Our customer service team will also be on hand right throughout Christmas. They are hoping Christmas passes without incident, but will be on hand to help with any emergencies.

We understand how important it is for you to be able to contact us easily so as well as our 24/7 operations contact centre, we’ll also be available on Twitter and Facebook.

If you have a general enquiry between 8am and 8pm call 03457 91 91 55. But if you see a leak of a problem with your water supply call Anglian Water’s emergency line 03457 145 145 which is manned 24/7 through Christmas and New Year.
