Colchester is the latest town to join the war against plastic as it announces its support of the nationwide ‘Refill’ campaign.
The campaign, which initially launched in Bristol, aims to create a national network of free drinking water refill points in a bid to reduce the millions of plastic water bottles which are used in the UK every day. Anglian Water, along with other water companies, has joined forces with environmental charity ‘City to Sea’, to bring the campaign to towns and cities across the UK with a target of rolling the scheme out to every major city and town in England by 2021.
Volunteer ambassadors of the campaign will be out and about this week ready to chat to the people of Colchester about how they can get involved and do their bit in the battle against plastic waste.
- Friday 20th April: Culver Square shopping centre, 12:30- 3pm
- Saturday 21st April: Colchester Market, outside Moss Bros, 10-3pm
- Sunday 22nd April: Zero Waste Expo, in Firstsite (Art Gallery), 10- 4pm
Anna Appleyard, a Refill volunteer, is organising the launch and is on a mission to spread the word: “It’s really simple to take part; if you’re a business you can register as an official Refill point on the website and if you’re a member of the public you can download the app to find your nearest Refill point when you’re out and about.
“We’ll be giving away refillable bottles on a first come first served basis across our stands on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Follow the Anglian Water Facebook page to find out when the giveaways will take place and come down to see us!”
A spokesperson from Colchester Borough Council commented: “We’re delighted to be supporting the Refill scheme in Colchester – a number of businesses have already registered as free refill points and we’re hopeful others will follow. It will be great to see the campaign grow as our town embraces it”.
The launch comes ahead of National Earth Day on Sunday 22nd April which is dedicated this year to changing attitudes and behaviours towards plastics.
Holly Goodchild from Anglian Water said: “Anglian Water stands against all wastefulness, and Refill is a fantastic initiative we’re proud to support. We’re lucky to have some of the best quality drinking water in the world, which is good value too, so we want it to be easy for people to access it on-the-go! Plus, not only is the Refill scheme good for the environment, it’s also good for your pocket- tap water works out at just half a pence a litre, compared to around 70 pence for a small bottle of shop-bought water.”
So, come on Colchester- it’s time to fill up!
