Anglian Water is launching a pioneering new project in Newmarket, focused on creating the future water company, today.

To mark the launch of the project and allow people to find out more, it’s holding a free community fun day this Saturday (9 September) at Severals in Newmarket.

Emma Staples from Anglian Water said: “It’s dry in East Anglia. We get a third less rain here than the rest of the country and we have a changing climate, which means flooding and drought could all become more common in future.  In a future with more people and fewer raindrops, making sure there’s enough water to go around whatever the weather is essential. So, we’re bringing in the best and brightest innovators and technology to Newmarket to make the water and water recycling network smarter. You put all of your best goods in the Shop Window, and that’s exactly what we are doing here in Newmarket.”

Anglian Water is working with more than 100 partners on 62 different projects to save water, fix problems before they happen, and help protect the environment. It has a number of ambitious goals including zero leakage and bursts; happy customers; and helping customers reduce their water usage to record lows of 80 litres per person per day.

“We know from spending time in Newmarket already that the people here are some of the savviest savers in the country, and this project – The Smarter Drop – will make the services we provide even smarter too. We’ve already rolled out successful innovations across the wider region, having pioneered them in Newmarket, such as the leakage drone and a special treatment process called Nereda.” Emma added.

To launch the initiative with the community, Anglian Water will be bringing a fairground of fun and an innovation trail to the Severals Pavilion this Saturday (9 September). People are welcome to come from 2pm-7pm on Saturday. There’ll be free food and drink, lots of fun, prizes to be won, and glimpses into the future of water. Visitors can marvel at the magician and water illusions, wander through our innovation trail with clever technologies on show, and immerse yourself in our virtual reality world of 3D engineering.

With only 1,000 spaces available, Anglian Water is encouraging people to register for tickets in advance, although people can also turn up on the day.  Those who register will guarantee their place and be entered into a free prize draw to win an iPad. www.event.anglianwater.co.uk/smarterdrop

What is the Innovation Shop Window?

We are working to create the water company of the future, today – starting right here in Newmarket.

It’s dry in East Anglia. We get a third less rain here than the rest of the country and we have a changing climate, which means heavy rainstorms, flooding and drought could all become more common in future.

We also have rapidly growing towns, cities and businesses, a special natural environment and a booming farming industry that most of the country relies on for food.  All of these need water to keep them going.

In a future with more neighbours and fewer raindrops, making sure there’s enough water to go around whatever the weather is essential. It’s why at Anglian Water we Love Every Drop and are investing millions of pounds to keep taps flowing, guard against flooding and protect our environment.
Newmarket’s water and sewerage infrastructure is perfect for bringing in the best new ideas to help make water services smarter for customers for generations to come.

You put all your best goods in the shop window, and that’s exactly what we’re doing in Newmarket. We’re bringing in the best and brightest innovators and technology to make the water and water recycling network smarter.

We are working with more than 100 partners on 62 different projects to save water, fix problems before they happen, and help protect the environment.
We’re already using a clever new sewer robot and drones with thermal imaging cameras to find hard to spot water leaks; smart meters have been installed at nearly 6,000 properties across Newmarket to help customers save water and money, and behind the scenes 3D models and virtual reality technology is helping us work smarter on large-scale engineering schemes.  We’re cutting carbon, cost and congestion with our new mobile sludge unit, which has allowed us to more than halve the number of tanker journeys required, and we’re designing the house of the future with the aim of building it in Newmarket soon.

This is the future of water and it starts here in Newmarket! That future is set out in seven futuristic but achievable goals: zero leakage and bursts; 100 per cent customer satisfaction; water consumption of 80 litres per person per day; zero pollution and flooding; 100 per cent compliant and chemical-free drinking water; carbon neutrality; and building a circular economy that eliminates the concept of waste from our processes.

What is the Smarter Drop campaign?

The Smarter Drop is our creative communications campaign designed to engage customers and stakeholders in the Innovation Shop Window initiative.
We’re explaining to customers that saving water is not all about smart technology.  It’s also about smart choices.

No matter how savvy we are, with a little help every household could be smarter about making the most of the water they use. When water gets wasted you pay more when you could be paying less.

Through working in the town we know that the people of Newmarket are some of the savviest in the country when it comes to making smart choices to save money. That’s why the smarter drop is as much about you as it is about us. We want to help customers save water and save money.
